WHERE, WHEN AND HOW TO LOOK FOR JOB VACANCIES IN NIGERIA
It is more or less a trend to identify unemployed or underemployed Nigerian Graduates through buying, leasing, part-time reading, borrowing or sharing mostly Tuesday and atimes Thursday Guardian newspaper where we look for possible job vacancies and opportunities.
This trend dates as far back as possible as I could recall a friend telling us when we were concluding our final year project how to get Tuesday Guardian as means of locating job openings.
Come to think of this as a major if not the only way to obtain viable job openings nationwide, does it really meet our needs because this medium covers millions of readers a day and hence is too competitive not withstanding the costly nature of it. I recall what my pocket was like after few months of buying Tuesday Guardian, paying for tickets to browse and sending other mails through Nipost, I speedily got broke without any positive response in view yet as to getting any job even if it is not my dream job.
Even the so-called networking sites like Nairaland, Bestforum, Naijajobs etc were becoming more profit oriented than abnormal, so what are the way or means through which an average Nigerian graduate can look for and get job openings.
Remember employment agencies that ask you to make payments are already out of the option “NEVER PAY ANYBODY TO ASSIST YOU GET A JOB” because they are fraudsters. I instead follow these simple but profitable rules:
(1) If you are located anywhere, be it city, town or suburb, please start there first, I will suggest you visit all he firms, factories and establishments related to your field, ask to see the Personnel or Human resources Manager. If you succeed, then let him inform you if any opening exists there, there are occasions where vacancies will exist in firms but the advert will not yet be placed till the management approves that, so if you were allowed to meet him, feel free to find out as much information as possible then ensure to submit your CV and credentials. This works wonders because once an opportunity comes as a result of resignation, death, undue termination of appointment or even expansion, you are definitely the best available replacement. After dropping your CV, then ask for a means of keeping in touch with him be it through phone, e-mail etc to enable you strengthen that relationship and believe
me if you do this, that manager will not forget you even if he lives for another firm.
(2) Form the usual habit of dropping your CV with firms you know that can absorb you even when they have not placed adverts and yet could not allow you to see the Human resources or Personnel manager. Ask the security to direct you to where or who to submit your CV to even if he says that they are not recruiting. A friend of mine walked into ORANGE DRUGS LTD at time and submitted CV, only to be invited later by a consulting firm which did not even advertise but wants to recruit for a new manufacturing firm that has just began operations, that makes it cost effective for them.
