It is no loner news that the Lagos State Government have banned the operators of commercial motorcyclist commonly called Okada from Major Highways in the State.I need no introduction or explanation to what an Okada is..anyway,for our folks in the diaspora Okada is Motorcycle in our local-naija palance.. It is the quickest means of road transportation around Lagos judging by its easy access to destinations irrespective of the traffic jam that adorn our roads on a daily basis. I board Okada on a daily basis (though for short distances) Even at that, i have had cause to quarrel with the riders most times for their reckless speeding. The other day,one rider bashed my left leg on the bumper of a vehicle apparently trying to manoeuver his way through the traffic. These are some of the ugly sides commuters who go on commercial bikes face daily. But apart from the bad sides, there are some benefits which i(others too) derive from riding on Okada. These include getting to my destination on time, beating the regular Lagos traffic, thereby saving precious time.
Any which way you look at it,Okada is useful to us all in one way or the other, also they have caused us pains or even serious bodily harm to our loved ones, friends, neigbors or colleauges.. Last week,i witnessed a horrible accident involving a trailer carrying container and Okada around Liverpool bridge (Apapa)..the rider died instantly..thank God he had no passenger on board..What a terrible death!
Did i hear you say Okada is a neccessary Evil? So what is your take on this? Can Lagos ever be the same with the Government Ban of Okada from the highways? Some States in Nigeria have already Outlawed Commercial Motorcycles..These States include( Imo,Rivers,Anambra,Enugu, etc)Others are gearing up to face out Okada once and for all..Can Lagosians judging by their ever busy nature do without Okada?Only time will tell.
